Dr. Maged Sharaf

Dr. Sharaf is a pharmacist, pharmacognosist, and analytical chemist. He is the director of scientific business development at CAMAG Scientific (USA), the world leader in planar chromatography. Before joining CAMAG, Dr. Sharaf was the chief science officer at the American Herbal Products Association (AHPA) where he helped to set quality standards for the herbal industry and provided guidance and advice to AHPA member companies, related organizations, government agencies, scientific publications, and the popular press. Before AHPA, Dr. Sharaf was with the United States Pharmacopeial Convention (USP) as its director, Foods, Dietary Supplements and Herbal Medicines. During his tenure at USP, he participated in launching two USP Compendia and developed botanical standards for inclusion in the United States Pharmacopeia-National Formulary (USP-NF). He was a pharmacy professor and has preceding experience conducting bioanalytical assay development and validation, and human bioequivalence studies in support of the pharmaceutical industry; quality control testing of finished dosage forms; dosage forms manufacturing; and retail pharmacy.

Dr. Sharaf is a founding member, member of the Board of Directors, and chair Method Review Committee of the International Association for the Advancement of High Performance Thin Layer Chromatography; member of USP expert committees, scientific advisor to the American Herbal Pharmacopeia, a council member of the Specialty Committee of Traditional Chinese Medicines–Pharmaceutical Analysis, World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies, and a member of several other scientific organizations.
